Mr. Amos E. “Dee” Bennett, 80, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Baptist Medical Center East. A graveside service for Mr. Bennett will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, August 13th, in Berea Cemetery with Rev. Gary Burton officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mr. Bennett was a proud 1959 graduate of Highland Home High School. After graduation, he would go on to become a builder for over 30 years and specialized in finished carpentry as the owner of A.E. Bennett Builders. He was also the owner of the Hi-Pine Laundry. In 1986, he purchased and moved into the Bradley Kirkpatrick House in Highland Home. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is the only surviving building of the original Highland Home College, and the oldest in town. Mr. Bennett took enormous pride in lovingly restoring and maintaining the historic home in order to preserve it for future generations.
Mr. Bennett was blessed with a gregarious and outgoing personality, which also meant he never met a stranger. In his free time, he thoroughly enjoyed spending it in some form of outdoor activity. He was a longtime member of Pintlala Baptist Church, where he taught the Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School class for over 20 years and served God faithfully. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose family and friends always came first.
Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Amos & Daisy Davis Bennett, and three siblings, Cecil Bennett, Ranelle Hillman, and Mattie Bell Cowles. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eileen Adams Bennett; two sons, Michael (Ann) Bennett and Adam (Jessica) Bennett; four grandchildren, Michael Elvin Bennett Jr, Deedie Ann Bennett, Annah Grace Harris, and Emily Hollinghead; two sisters, Mary Rebel Benton and Ella Mae Frazier; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be T.H. Cowles, Nick Montieth, Byron White, Michael Bennett Jr, Aaron Adams Sr, and Aaron Adams Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be the Pintlala Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Pintlala Baptist Church Children’s Playground, ℅ Pintlala Baptist Church, 73 Federal Road, Hope Hull, Alabama 36043.
