Bennett Allen Duncan, 63, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Thursday, July 27th, 2023. A graveside service will be held for Bennett at 10 AM on Saturday, July 29th, in Cool Springs Cemetery with Rev. Scott Sexton officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. A celebration of his life will directly follow in New Ebenezer Baptist Church with all invited to attend and visit with the family.
Bennett was a proud graduate of Highland Home High School. After many years working as a sewing machine mechanic at different textile factories. After they closed, he found a new career after attending Ozark Aviation College where he learned to be a helicopter mechanic. He soon found a job with Ft. Rucker where he was not only extremely proud of the work he did there to keep the pilots safely in the air, but he also just truly loved what he did. Not everyone can be so fortunate to even find a career they are proud of, but to also find one that you just love doing is a rare blessing. Ft. Rucker also considered itself fortunate to find a mechanic who believed in the value of hard work and gave everything he had while he was there.
Bennett loved nothing more than spending time outside. It could be taking care of his chickens, fishing, or something as simple as just floating down the river. Fresh air, sunshine, and just the beauty of nature were all he needed to be happy and feel at peace. On Saturdays, however, you can bet he was going to be near a TV in the Fall so he could cheer on his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide, though he was the rarer fan who found joy in every sport they played instead of just football. Personally, Bennett loved to play softball and getting to eventually play with his son, Ryan, was truly the best of all! Well, actually, probably the greatest happiness he found in sports was getting to cheer on his grandson, Clay, in both football and baseball, especially as he went on to help his teams at Lowndes Academy win state championships in both sports last year. However, there was no discrimination either, as Bennett was also tickled to watch his granddaughter, Cheyenne, find her way into his own sport of softball!
Obviously, there was nothing greater than family to Bennett. They were his greatest love and who made him the happiest every single day. He may have thought there was no one on earth he would love more than his son, however, as all grandparents know, there's just nothing better than those grandchildren! He absolutely adored them and constantly doted on them. He was also the best brother possible to his sister, Dianne. Truly, he just loved his family, period. There was no one he'd rather spend time with and they thrived under his love and attention. They also delighted in his fantastic sense of humor. No one could make them laugh like Bennett and there are just too many stories that leave them in stitches, followed by tears from laughing so hard. It is those stories and the host of other cherished memories that will sustain them in these hard days now that he is gone, though he will continue to live on in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives.
Bennett was preceded in death by his infant son, Brandon A. Duncan, and parents, Howard & Bonnie Owens Duncan. He is survived by his cherished son and daughter-in-law, Ryan & Tiffany Duncan; their children, Clay Duncan and Cheyenne Duncan; his sister, Dianne (Geoff) Vassas; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Donald Means, Chad Still, Thomas Calhoun, Jesse Dempsey, Michael Wood, and Aaron Gorman.
