SPEED, Mrs. Betty Russell, 86, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018. Funeral services for Mrs. Speed will be held at 11 AM on Friday, August 24, at the First Baptist Church of Luverne with Rev. Clay Crum officiating. Interment will follow in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Speed held Master’s degrees in both Counseling and English Education, and she dedicated her life to teaching English and working as a guidance counselor in area high schools for 40 years. She was also a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Additionally, she thoroughly enjoyed gardening and dishing out advice to all she knew. Mrs. Speed was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Lee Speed; parents, W.I. and Ida Lou Moore Russell; two brothers, Joe Richard (Sue) Russell and Billy Ray (Arree) Russell; and two sisters, Hilda Russell Tranum and Wilma Russell (Johnny) Cook. She is survived by her three children, Emmett Lee (Pam) Speed Jr, William Edward (Paula) Speed, and Melissa Dale Speed; five grandchildren, Lindsay Lee Speed (Jay) Taylor, Emilee Anna Speed, Jackson Lee Speed, Hayden Lane Speed, and Matthew Speed McDonald; three great-grandchildren, Caroline Cassidy Taylor, Bennett Speed Taylor, and Thomas McDonald; sister, Nonie Ruth Russell (Sam) Taylor; lifelong friend, Carolyn Hicks; and numerous nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Rusty Taylor, Jason Taylor, Hamp Russell, Irvin Russell, George Tranum, and Jim Tranum. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeffrey Beall, Warren Shows, Michael Gilchrist, and her Men’s Sunday School class. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Luverne, 45 East Third Street, Luverne, Alabama 36049. They will receive friends at the church on Friday from 9:30 - 11 AM.
