HUGHES, Mr. Cecil Byron, 75, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully October 30, 2017 at his residence after an extensive battle with cancer. Funeral services for Mr. Hughes will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, November 2, from the chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Layton and Rev. Steve Defee officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Hughes began working in construction as a young man. Shortly after, he joined the Alabama Army National Guard serving six years with four of those years being in the Military Police Unit. This developed his interest in law enforcement work and began a 35-year career of service to Crenshaw County in law enforcement. His great love for the people of Crenshaw County was most evident during his time of service to this county. He was actively involved in community activities including Scout Master in Boy Scouts, Goshen Elementary and High School PTO, Saddle Club, Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department, participating in a Christian-based motorcycle riding club, and church responsibilities with his present membership being at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church of Luverne. Throughout the years, Mr. Hughes’ subsequent work and skill was in commercial building, rising to the position of Construction Superintendent at age 21. Mr. Hughes led the construction of hundreds of commercial businesses throughout the state as well as in other states though primarily in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Hughes was dedicated to his career, community, family, and friends. Mr. Hughes loved people and brought smiles to most he encountered no matter the circumstance. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Amanda Hughes Beckwith, his parents, Gus Henry Hughes and Esther King Hughes, three brothers, Henry Hughes, Larry Hughes, Kip Hughes, and sister, Ann Drinkard Thompson. Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Baggett Hughes, son, Byron Neil (Fran) Hughes, daughter, Celia Hughes (Tony) Kelley, seven grandchildren, Macy Beckwith, Anna Hughes, Ben Hughes, Trent Rolling, Marli Rolling, Brett Kelley, Jacy (Michael) Spurlin, one great-grandchild, Landry Kate Spurlin, two brothers, King (Betty Sue) Hughes and Fox (Martha) Hughes, two sisters, Virginia Blackmon and Sue Eiland, one brother-in-law, Lamar Drinkard, and three sisters-in-law, Sybil Hughes, Audrey Hughes, and Rose Hughes and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 1, from 5 – 8pm.
