Charles was a phenomenal mechanic who also loved building race cars for many years. Truthfully, he had a love of the fast lane as a younger man, especially when it involved motorcycles and fast cars. That was a love he shared with his children and grandchildren, despite not really wanting to see them follow too closely in his footsteps in that arena. However, he did thoroughly enjoy taking his grandchildren along in the "packing" car used to pack down local & regional racetracks before the race. In fact, the man affectionately known as "Papa," shared most of his interests with the grandchildren he loved with his whole heart. Whether it was gazing at the stars (and looking for possible UFOs!), hunting armadillos, or fishing. And like any smart adult, he always made sure to park his fishing boat under the perfect shade tree...while the grandkids got to "enjoy" the sun in the front of the boat!
Charles was the kind of man everyone wanted around, particularly because not only was he typically in a good mood, but he also knew how to bring humor to any situation....and sometimes life just takes you on such sharp curves that all you can do is laugh as you deal with it. He was also such a thoughtful and selfless soul that he could truly nourish your soul through even the most difficult of situations. Charles was blessed with a lot of hard-earned patience and a laidback personality, so he was slow to anger, but stand back if you managed to accomplish that feat! Ultimately, he was the kind of person everyone should strive to be more like, and he was certainly loved beyond measure by all those who knew him. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be missed more than words could ever hope to express. Charles does leave behind a lifetime of memories of good times and amazing love that will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all those he leaves behind.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Murrell Funso & Ruby Kate Sorrells Compton. He is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda Compton; children, Shelly Compton (Ken) Baker, Nicole Compton (Jason) Blackmon, and Charles Hagen (Jennifer) Compton; grandchildren, Zane (Kenadee) Baker, Korey (Emily) Williams, Maci Baker (Breyton) Baugh, Emory "Grace" Compton, and Elizabeth Baker; great-grandchildren, Kollyns Williams, Kane Baker, and Tate Foster; sister, Sabrina Compton (Ray) Owens; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Chad Williamson, Derek Williamson, Carrie Williamson, Zane Baker, Luke Johnson, Zack Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, and Marty White.
