Mr. Donny Ray Holmes, 67, a lifelong resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020, at Crenshaw Community Hospital after a battle with lung cancer.
Mr. Holmes dedicated his life to taking care of others as a Licensed Practical Nurse, working in hospitals in both Troy and Luverne. He loved nothing more than taking care of his patients during all of those years. That love also extended to his animals. He raised chickens for many years, and had several cats and dogs at various times. His Mollie never left his side at night, and Dooley enjoyed going to check on the chickens with him everyday. He also loved taking care of his yard and sharing his gift with flowers with so many.
In his free time, Mr. Holmes had a wide variety of interests and hobbies. He loved expanding his mind through reading, studying history, and his artwork. Whenever he felt up to it, he kept up with friends and current events through Facebook. He also loved watching anything historical, National Geographic, Dr. Pol, and Downton Abbey. He was also a great cook and spent a good deal of time tracking down the family history. Above all, he was one of the kindest souls you would ever meet, and could make anyone laugh. He wanted to make sure that all of his family members and friends knew how much he loved them. All those who knew and loved him will cherish their memories of him from now on.
Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Ray & Claudia B. Surles Holmes. He is survived by his two sisters, Janice Adkison and Jean (Ronnie) Odum; nephew, Joey M. (Christy) Powell; great-niece, Tristen Hope Enterprise; great-nephew, Aiden M. Enterprise; and many close & dearly loved friends.
Mr. Holmes chose not to have a memorial service, so, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to either a cancer charity or one’s charity of choice.
