Highland Home

Mrs. Doris Tisdale McElwain, 87, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. Funeral services for Mrs. McElwain will be held at 10 AM on Friday, August 6th, at Highland Home Church of Christ with Brother Dean Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. McElwain spent most of her working career supervising the offices of what would become Bellsouth. After her retirement in 1991, she enjoyed spending the next 29 years of her life as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. As one of 10 children, she learned early in life how important it was to cherish her family and that was the main objective of her life. There was nothing she loved more than taking care of her family and spending time with them. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time outside in various pursuits, from gardening to repairing fences. She was also a longtime member of Highland Home Church of Christ, where she was blessed to worship her Lord with her church family. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister who was a true treasure to not only her family but also all those who knew her.

Mrs. McElwain was preceded in death by her husband, Balford McElwain; parents, Dewitt Llewellyn & Vera Roberts Tisdale; and siblings, Travis Tisdale, Wesley Tisdale, Myra Pouncey, Frances Wells, Alene Crawford, and Ellen Ward. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ricky & Sheila McElwain; grandchildren, Cory (Amanda) McElwain & Tory McElwain; great-grandchildren, Ally McElwain & Emmalee Lane; siblings, Mary Kelly, Quitman (Carolyn) Tisdale, and Patricia Franklin; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Pouncey, Fred Kelly, Adam Williams, Jason Williams, Richard Tisdale, and Mike Owens.

The family will receive friends at Turners Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 - 8 PM.
