Mrs. Edna Messick Boutwell, 90, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, November 28th, 2022. A graveside service for Edna will be held at 2:30 PM on Thursday, December 1st, in Dozier Cemetery with Rev. Steve Defee officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12:30 - 1:30 PM before the service.
Edna spent her entire working career dazzling with her cooking skills. She worked in the lunchroom at Dozier School until it closed and finished out her career at Brantley. She was well-known for her cooking skills with all those who knew and loved her as well. She could usually be counted on to not only prepare meals for her family, but made sure she would have enough to feed anyone who happened to stop by. Everyone was particularly fond of her delicious cakes, and she loved sharing those with those nearest and dearest to her heart. Her generosity was a natural part of her outgoing spirit. She loved spending time with others, and was always so very kind and compassionate with them. Edna was certainly a shining example to all those who knew her. She raised her family of five children on her own after she tragically became a widow far too soon, and she did it all with grace under the pressures of life. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to three generations! She will be dearly missed, but she lived a long full life and leaves behind a wonderful legacy of love.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Hilrey Dean; parents, Harold & Lonie Sasser Messick; and siblings, Bobbie Nell Armstrong, Hilrey Messick, and Jimmy Lanier. She is survived by her husband, Virgil Boutwell; children, Linda (Donnie) Greer, Carlos "Buddy" (Grace) Dean, Will Dean, Cathy (Robert) Canant, and Michael (Helen) Dean; grandchildren, Tony (Vickie) Greer, Kevin (Katie) Dean, Hope (Lee) McGowin, Laken Dean, Hillary (Blake) Hermeling, Trinia Riddle, Chessie Canant, Dusty (Whitney) Dean, Michelle (Rick) Wunsh, and Faith Dean; eighteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sister, Cassie Harwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
