Eureka Sikes Rhodes

December 13, 1920 — December 27, 2022

Highland Home

Mrs. Eureka Sikes Rhodes, 102, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Georgiana Health & Rehabilitation on Tuesday, December 27th, 2022.

Eureka was born in 1920 as the oldest of four siblings. She was a proud graduate of Highland Home High School and was the last surviving member of the Class of 1940. She saw and experienced much in the century that she lived from the Great Depression and World War II to the advent of computers, flights to the moon, and smartphones. Naturally, she had many stories to tell as a member of the Greatest Generation of hardship, sacrifice, and innovation. She was known to all as "Granny," and took her greatest pride in being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who lived to take care of her family. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed sharing her passion for whipping up delicious meals and desserts with everyone. Eureka made her passion her career as she served as the lunchroom manager at Highland Home High School for 29 years until her retirement. Even then, she was blessed to continue to live a full, active, and healthy life until shortly before her 102nd birthday. She was a dedicated member of the Church of Christ for 77 years, 61 of which she worshipped with her church family at Highland Home Church of Christ. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her, but they are comforted by all of the many years they had together and the knowledge that she is now happily in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Eureka was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Hayne Mitchell; grandson, Ron Mitchell; parents, Danley & Pauline Clayton Sikes; and siblings, Charles Sikes, Jean Jocelyn, Ruth Adams. She is survived by her beloved children, Ronny (Mary Ann) Rhodes and Linda Mitchell; grandchildren, Ronald Rhodes, Kelly Rhodes, and Tonia Phillips; great-grandchildren, Justin, Clayton, Collier, and Chandler Rhodes, Samantha Phillips, and Jennifer Neitsch; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

A memorial service for Eureka will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, January 22nd, at Highland Home Church of Christ with Brother Dean Kelly officiating.
