Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11 AM.
Evanell lived an incredibly long and productive life that was inspiring for all those who knew and loved her. She received her bachelor's degree from Troy Teachers College in 1951 and started her first job at Glenwood Elementary School shortly thereafter. Then she fell in love, got married in 1953, and set about at excelling at raising five wonderful children along with her beloved husband, Dan, and those who knew her would have expected nothing less. She was finally coaxed back into the classroom a few years after her last child was born. She had the distinction of having taught at all three public schools in Crenshaw County before she eventually retired from Brantley High School after a storied career of 33 years in the classroom. Her impact on the lives of the thousands of students she taught over the years is immeasurable. Be it in academics, life lessons, or just being a support system to those who needed it most, Evanell has left behind a truly remarkable legacy that will live on through generations to come.
She had a creative soul that was nourished through beautiful poetry, but there were few things she loved more than music. She could play the piano quite skillfully, and family music nights were some of her children's most treasured memories together through the years. They were especially grateful for her amazing skills when it came to the kitchen. There was nothing she couldn't make, and happily fixed each family member's favorite dishes and desserts whenever the opportunity presented itself. Sadly, she was a true cook, therefore had all of her best recipes solely in her head and no one has ever been able to exactly replicate them.
Evanell also loved to travel, visiting 47 of the 48 contiguous states, as well as both Mexico and Europe, mixing the Old World with the New. Back in her beloved Glenwood, she so often devoted a large portion of her time to her church, Glenwood Methodist. At the time of her passing, she was its oldest member and had served in so many roles there over the years, from Sunday School & Bible School teacher, to playing the piano, singing & directing the choir, and staying active in the WSCS. There just aren't enough words or descriptors to truly capture the entirety of Evanell's life. There was so much she did and accomplished in her 93 years, but she was proudest of her family. Her children blessed her with 12 grandchildren and then they gave her 13 great-grandchildren. She and Dan have long been the foundation that their family has been built on. They have all gone on to have many accomplishments of their own, but all of those were made possible by that very foundation she helped lay. She will be missed terribly but, if only everyone could make such a impact on their community as she has, the world would be a far better place.
Evanell was preceded in death by her parents, Jake & Laura Eve Curtis Carmichael, and five siblings. She is survived by the love of her life, her devoted husband of almost 70 years, Dan Jackson; their children, Daniel Forrest "Jack" (Melissa) Jackson III, Andrew Curtis (Gena) Jackson, Ivan Douglas (Beverly) Jackson, Timothy Michael (Carol) Jackson, and Martha Anne Jackson (Ken) Williams; grandchildren, Forrest (Brooke) Jackson, Elizabeth Jackson, Daniel (Sherei) Jackson, Drew (Sara) Jackson, Madison (Steven) Laye, Emily Jackson, Laura (Ethan) McBride, Timothy (Mixon) Jackson, Michael Jackson, Isabella Jackson, Jake Allison, and Virginia Allison; great-grandchildren, Isla, Marley, & Lily Wilander, Wilkes & Anders Jackson, Adalena & Acadia Jackson, Anna Gray, Wells, & Evan Jackson, Lola & Finn Laye, and Theodore McBride; sister, Enid Folmar; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
