Mr. Gail Winfred Smith, 91, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Luverne Health and Rehabilitation on Sunday, September 25th, 2022.
Mr. Smith proudly served his country during both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts with the United States Army. In total, he served over 20 years in the Ohio National Guard, Army and Air Force before retiring as a staff sergeant. Mr. Smith was always committed to doing whatever he could to serve both his country and his community. He spent over 35 years as a member of Highland Home Fire & Rescue as both an EMT and firefighter. He also worked as a deputy sheriff in Crenshaw County and as a police officer before retiring from the State of Alabama as well. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished every moment he was able to spend with the ones he loved.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd & Annabell Hites Smith, and siblings, William Smith, John Smith, Wilbur Smith, Charles Smith, George Smith, Betty Smith, Mary Hopkins, and Helen Steed. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances K. Jackson Smith; their children, Patty (Joe) Defee, Shelly (Mike) Dunn, Paul Smith, and Kenneth (Shelby) Smith; grandchildren, Amanda (Aaron) Williamson, Candice (Drew) Dearman, John (Tessa) Dunn, Taylor (Brandon) Swan, Chase (Becca) Smith, and Nick (Casandra) Smith; and great-grandchildren, Emma Jane Williamson, John Sawyer Dunn, and Oaken Ridge Swan.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later time.
