Mr. Gary Wayne Dorsey, 69, a resident of Lapine, Alabama, passed away at Baptist Medical Center South on Wednesday, May 31st, 2023. The family will receive friends at Turners Funeral Home on Monday, June 5th, from 6 - 8 PM. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
Gary proudly served his country with the United States Army in his youth and later spent most of his working career as the parts manager for forklift sales and service. In his free time, there was nothing he loved more than finding an excuse to be outside. He enjoyed hunting and could often be found relaxing on a bank or in a boat at a favorite fishing hole. He also tended to his own garden and took loving care of his mother-in-law's beloved flower beds when she was no longer able to do so herself. You see, that's just the kind of man Gary was. He truly and deeply cared about others, especially those who he knew and loved so well. He would be the first to show up when someone needed help, whether it was sitting with them in the hospital or making sure things were in order around their home. He was warm, generous, and loving with everyone who crossed his path, determined to do what he could to ensure that kindness remained in this hard world.
There was no greater joy in Gary's life than spending time with his family, and he nurtured a special relationship with his grandsons. He had spent a little time as a cowboy many years ago, even winning a buckle for cattle roping, so he always enjoyed seeing one whether in person or on TV. However, no matter how involved he was in watching one, let one of those grandboys mention wanting to watch a cowboy movie with him and they watched a cowboy movie! John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, it didn't matter to him, it was just about spending time together. Gary knew the value of building those valuable memories together because they are truly irreplaceable. They weren't blessed with as many years as they hoped they would have, but he will certainly live on in their hearts and minds for many years. We should all be so fortunate to leave behind the legacy of love and generosity that he has.
Gary was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Collier Dorsey; daughter, Sally Dorsey; and parents, Comer & Rebecca Hatfield Dorsey. He is survived by his loving wife, Traci Kelley Dorsey; children, Tammy Dorsey, Kalan (John) Gannon, Lorrie (Charlie) Miller, Amanda Frazier, Anna Johns; grandchildren, Comer Dorsey, Garrett Dorsey, Zackery Dorsey, Brayden Lawrence, and Elias Gannon; and sisters, Connie Roberson and Debbie (Levon) Wallace.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made either to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children at https://donate.lovetotherescue.org or the American Cancer Society at https://donate.cancer.org.
