Gene Harold Jackson, 84, a resident of Honoraville, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Jackson Hospital on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023. A celebration of his life will be held at 3 PM on Thursday, June 29th, at Danielville Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Looney officiating.
Gene proudly served his country with the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961. He spent his time on the U.S.S. Boxer, which was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers and the fifth ship in U.S. Naval history to be named after the HMS Boxer, a gunship in the British Royal Navy that the United States captured in the War of 1812. Gene was extremely proud of his service on the Boxer during Operation Hardtack, which was a series of 35 nuclear tests conducted in 1958 at the Pacific Proving Grounds. His participation made him an official Atomic Veteran, and he was going to make sure he sported a tag on his vehicles that denoted him as such!
After his honorable discharge, Gene decided to pursue his love of woodworking by going into the cabinetry business. He grew so proficient that he was able to open his own business, Jackson's Cabinet Shop in Greenville, where he made custom cabinetry for over 20 years. Gene was definitely a character and one of a kind. He possessed a strong-willed and independent personality which served him well while he ran his business and helped ensure his success. Of course, that carried over into his personal life as no one ever doubted who was in charge at home too! He also loved to fish when he got the time and he loved following the Atlanta Braves on TV. He was a proud member of the Baptist Church as well, serving as a deacon at both Danielville Baptist Church and when he lived in Bon Secour, Alabama. There were two things in his life he was proudest of though: his service and his family. Gene never tired of telling stories about either whenever he got together with his friends. He was a truly loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who never failed to support them in whatever activities and pursuits they chose. He will be missed more than he will ever know, but his loved ones will find comfort in the knowledge that he is now at rest in the arms of his loving savior, Jesus Christ.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, J.F. Jackson and Exa Reeves Pogue, and an infant brother, Warren Charles Jackson. He is survived by his beloved children and their spouses, Martha Ann & Tom Miller and Steve & Shauna Jackson; granddaughters, Meagan (Scott) White and Rebecca Wallace; and great-grandchildren, Lauren White, Luke White, and Madelynn Wallace.
