Mr. Guy Ashby Bruce, 84, succumbed to his battle with COVID-19 on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Crenshaw Community Hospital. A graveside service for Mr. Bruce will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, January 30th, in Hopewell Cemetery with Dr. Sam Tate officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mr. Bruce proudly served his country with the United States Air Force. After his discharge, he continued working with the military as a civilian contractor. Thanks to his job, Mr. Bruce was able to travel all over the world, from Antewetok & Johnson Island in the Pacific to White Sands, New Mexico Air Force Base and Honolulu, Hawaii, where he also worked as a guide to families there. After moving to Luverne, he worked for many years as the kitchen manager at the Crenshaw County Recreational Club, where he made sure the golfers stayed well fed. He later opened and managed his own cleaning company until he decided to retire.
Mr. Bruce was a graduate of Troy High School and went on to the University of Alabama. He was also an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was also a faithful member of South Luverne Baptist Church, where he held several roles over the years, including a worship leader, piano player, Bible School teacher, and deacon. He was loved by everyone who knew him, and he had a heart big enough for everyone. He loved helping others and could always be counted on to jump in to do whatever needed to be done. He will certainly be sorely missed by all those he leaves behind.
Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, George & Jewell Spencer Bruce; two siblings, Lotherene Brown & Spencer Bruce; and niece, Kathy Montgomery. He is survived by his nephew, Bob (Georgette) Bruce; nephew-in-law, John Montgomery; great-nephew, Josh Bruce; and four great-nieces, Hanna Clark, Bryson Kessler, Mary Ann Hudson, and Beth Booth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations by made to South Luverne Baptist Church.
