Harry Lomax Phillips, 74, a resident of Opp, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025. Funeral services for Harry will be held at 2 PM on Friday, January 2, 2026 from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with his nephews Matthew Payne officiating and Kurt Frost delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Spring Hill South Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday for one hour prior to the service.
Harry was an amazingly talented singer, a gift that was recognized early on as a member of the Luverne High School FFA Quartet when he won a national FFA competition as a soloist. As a teenager, his love for horses led him to spend a lot of his free time breaking horses. He was also a proud member of the LHS Class of 1969. He was also the lead singer of his family's traveling band, the Phillips Brothers Band, and they all had more than their fair share of adventures on the road! He also served his country with both the United States Army and the Alabama Army National Guard as a paratrooper and medic. After his service, he went on to work as the plant manager for Judy Bond in Brewton before he ended up using that awesome voice to become a beloved morning host and general manager for WAMI in Opp, spinning out some of his favorite country songs, until his retirement. Harry was absolutely an adventurer at heart. You could always bet that he was going to choose the road less traveled every chance he got because, to Harry, every adventure was going to be worth it!
Honestly, to know him was simply to love him. He was always going to be your number one cheerleader because he was the type of selfless who always wanted to put others first. That's just who he was: generous to a fault and one of the most compassionate people you'd ever have the pleasure to meet. Truly, his unfaltering optimism and positivity gave him a tremendous gift for uplifting everyone he encountered. His heart was big enough for the entire world as he always led with it first. If you needed to find the silver lining in any situation, just go sit by Harry for a while and he was bound to help you find it. A good day for Harry these last few years was spent playing with his furbaby Belle with his "babe," his wife Mandy, by his side. Above all, he was simply the best family member and friend anyone could have asked for, and he will forever more hold such a special place in all of their hearts.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton & Edna Davis Phillips, and siblings, Joseph Phillips, Hank Phillips, Sam Phillips, David Phillips, Frank Phillips, and Carolyn Phillips Frost. He is survived by his loving wife of 8 years, Amanda "Mandy" Wingard Phillips; children, Claire Fendley Phillips and Justin (Madi) McCormick; grandchildren, Millie June McCormick and Bowen Wade McCormick on the way; siblings, Leo (Pearl) Phillips, Eddie (Linda) Phillips, and Sylvia (David) Payne; his beloved canine companion, Belle; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
