Mrs. Hazel Lorraine Flynn Gregory, 98, a lifelong resident of Rutledge, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, November 22, 2019. Funeral services for Mrs. Gregory will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 25, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Hogwood officiating. Interment will follow in Rutledge Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mrs. Gregory was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, who was cherished by her family. She and her husband, Bill, exemplified what a solid, Biblical marriage was supposed to be, helpmeets to each other. In fact, of the 37 years Mrs. Gregory worked as a clerk in the Rutledge Post Office, she spent 30 of those years working with her husband as the postmaster. She was also a strong-willed, independent woman, and was affectionately referred to as “spunky” by her children. She was also a dedicated Christian woman who was a true servant of the Lord. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Rutledge, where she was a pianist for over 70 years and taught numerous Sunday School classes. Additionally, she was the president of the Alabama Crenshaw Baptist Association WMU for many years. Her light and love will be sorely missed by all those she leaves behind.
Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by her husband, William F. “Bill” Gregory; parents, Joe M. and Linnie Belle Flynn; and brother, Joe Harold Flynn. She is survived by her two loving children, Flinn (Ikey) Gregory and Fran Lorraine Gregory Christian; three grandchildren, George (Rebecca) Gregory, Kevin (Corrie) Christian, and Connie Lorraine Christian (Heath) Garmon; special great-granddaughter and caregiver, Alexis Lorraine Christian; fifteen other great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be John Ganey, Andy Tomlin, Willie Von Hilburn, Donald Hilburn, Rocky Williams, Kevin Christian, Heath Garmon, and Brock Flynn. Marshall Brown and Rev. Don Yancey will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Rutledge Cemetery Fund. They will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 10 - 11 AM.
