Jack Owen Zimmer

May 29, 1935 — November 16, 2017

ZIMMER, Mr. Jack Owen, 82, a resident of Ramer, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 16, 2017. Funeral services for Mr. Zimmer will be held at 2 PM on Monday, November 20, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Ira Walton, Rev. Chuck Ford, and Rev. Robert Paul officiating. Interment will follow in Crossview Cemetery in Highland Home, Alabama with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Brother Zimmer accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on September 8, 1945. He began teaching Sunday school at the age of 15 and he surrendered to preach the gospel when he was 16 years old. He dedicated the next 63 years of his life to serving God and his congregations as a Baptist minister in New Mexico, Illinois, Georgia, and Alabama. Brother Zimmer married his college sweetheart, Louise Bell, on August 28, 1956. Together they faithfully served the Lord as they raised their family and lovingly ministered everywhere the Lord directed them, most recently, to serving as the pastor of Crossview Baptist Church in Highland Home, Alabama. He was lovingly known to all as “Preacher,” but he also allowed the Lord to use him as a carpenter, handyman, contractor, farmer, laborer, bus driver, teacher, music director, and in many other ways. No job was too menial for him as long as it was a means by which he could share the love of Jesus and point people to Christ, teaching and mentoring them in their walk with the Lord. Brother Zimmer was preceded in death by his daughter, Carmen Joan Sunday, daughter-in-law, Karen Zimmer, two great-grandchildren, Job Haney and Scarlet Carnicle, parents, Harold and Velma Cochran Zimmer, and his brother, Gail Zimmer. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Louise Bell Zimmer, five children, Gretchen (Kevin) Day, Jill Zimmer, Kristen (Buster) Marrall, Melissa (Ed) Neate, and Andrew Zimmer, twenty grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister, Jean High, and brother, Mark (Laurene) Zimmer. Active pallbearers will be Eddie Reese, Shannon McKenzie, Ed Neate, Buster Marrall, Kevin Day, and Andy Zimmer. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Crossview Baptist Church, 3427 Sweetwater Road, Highland Home, Alabama 36041. They will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 12:30 – 2 PM.
