Jackie D. Layton, 72, a lifelong resident of Brantley, Alabama, passed away at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Friday, June 28th, 2024. A graveside service for Jackie will be held at 2 PM on Monday, July 1st, in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Brantley with a eulogy delivered by Willie Smith and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at service time.
Jackie was a proud graduate of Brantley High School and later received his associate's degree from Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College. He spent 50 years in the timber business, most of it as a cruiser during the buying process. He was also a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He remained a lifetime fan and supporter of his beloved Brantley Bulldogs, as well as of the Auburn Tigers. In his free time, he enjoyed more solitary activities like farming and fishing where it was just him and nature, co-existing peacefully.
Jackie was, by nature, a very private man who was typically quite reserved around strangers. However, he could develop an easy rapport and camaraderie with the people who mattered the most to him. You should never mistake his reserved nature for someone who wasn't willing to stand up for himself and what he believed in as Jackie had as strong a will as anyone you could meet. Still, he was also the rare individual who could be completely happy in his own company as he didn't need others to entertain him or keep him from boredom. He held a special place within his family as a son, brother, and uncle who will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. & Myra Raley Layton; brother, Larry Horn; and brother-in-law, Eldrid Smith. He is survived by his sisters, June Layton (Willie) Smith, Linda Layton (Bernie) Sullivan, and Nancy Layton Smith; nieces & nephews, Jessica Smith (John) Meriwether, Natalie Rebecca (Troy) Bradley, Jill Smith (Van) Carroll, Jonathan (Morgan) Helms, and Austin (Alex) Brook; grand-nieces & nephews, Sam, Layton, Raley, Lillie, Willa, Lee, John Layton, Lola Beth, Lottie, Emma Jaymes, Ivy Drew, and Tripp; and close friends, Mark Andrews, Edwin Mitchell, and Kenny Pinckard.
Active pallbearers will be John Meriwether, Troy Bradley, Van Carroll, Jonathan Helms, Austin Brook, and Sam Meriwether.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his caregivers, Annie Gipp, Sue Ann Rayburn, Maranda Davis, and Chrissy Kelly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery, c/o Brenda Davis, 4374 South Glenwood Road, Brantley, Alabama 36009.
