James "Jimmy" Lewis Baggett, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his home on September 3, 2026, while surrounded by his wife of 55 years, Betty Baggett and his two daughters, Alicia Vines and Sharon Hendrick. Funeral services for Mr. Baggett will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, September 5th, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Reverend Kenny Baggett officiating. Interment will follow at Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.

Jimmy grew up in Glenwood and spent all his life there except for the years he served in Germany as a member of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. Jimmy was a master craftsman as both an electrician and a plumber. He started his trades as a young boy working along with his father. Jimmy always credited his father with teaching him to give full attention to the task at hand, to pay attention to detail and to do the job right the first time. Jimmy enjoyed serving his community and was always mindful of doing a fair job for fair pay. It was once said that Jimmy had worked under almost every house in Glenwood.

Jimmy was also a consummate Glenwood historian. He could recite the dates and events of Glenwood's history dating back for over a hundred years. Years ago, he had the old train depot moved from the railroad tracks to his home place. He enjoyed sharing stories about the depot and the trains that used to stop in Glenwood. Jimmy's love of artifacts was evidenced in his collection of everything from glass insulators to other items. He enjoyed working with old tools and figuring out how they worked. He could examine most anything and figure out how it worked. He passed his inquiring-minded nature to his grandsons, Aaron Hendrick who is an electrical engineer, and Aidan Vines who is pursuing his mechanical engineering degree. Jimmy's most recent pride and joys are the giant church bell erected beside the old shelter and the post with colorful glass insulators planted in the side yard.

Jimmy was an avid fisherman and enjoyed teaching his grandsons how to fish with his old cane pole. He also loved to talk with people and to get to hear their stories. Up until he became ill, he volunteered his time to work at the Glenwood polling place and to serve as a member of the Providence Cemetery committee. Mr. Ronny Turner once commented that if Jimmy Baggett measured a burial lot that there was no doubt it was measured right. The passing of Jimmy leaves a big void in the Town of Glenwood. Seeing him in his work boots, khakis, and plaid shirt will be greatly missed.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Andrew (Juanita) Baggett and Mary Lucy Shirley Baggett; brothers, Charles Baggett and Shelby (Mary Grace) Baggett; and his sister, Shirley Baggett Brooks. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Sue Sanders Baggett; his two daughters, Alicia Vines and Sharon (Michael) Hendrick; three grandchildren, Aaron (Madyson) Hendrick, Ali Hendrick, and Aidan Vines; great-grandson, Weston Hendrick; sister-in-law, Nellie Baggett; brother-in-law, Marcus Brooks; a special nephew, John (Barbara) Arthur; and a host of other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. A special mention is being given to Jimmy's longtime friends Newton Holmes and Butch Jones.

Active pallbearers will be Aaron Hendrick, Aidan Vines, Matthew Arthur, Brandon Grantham, Ben Hughes, and Mason Brooks. Honorary pallbearers are Butch Jones and Newton Holmes.
