BEST, Mr. James Heber, 93, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2018. Funeral services for Mr. Best will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, August 8, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Highland Home with President Michael Nimmer and Elder William Hendrix officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mr. Best was a loving husband and father. He proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II where he was in the first wave of troops to land on Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service there. Mr. Best later retired from the State Department of Transportation where he had worked as a highway engineer for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary White Best; their son, Tony Best; grandson, Steven Lynn Grace Jr; son-in-law, Steven Lynn Grace Sr; parents, Turnbow and Mattie Bell White Best; sister, Lucille Warren; and his two brothers, Pete Best and Tom Best. Mr. Best is survived by his three daughters, Connie Best Martin, Jessica Best Grace, and Tammy Best (Jeff) Dolan; nine grandchildren, Tonya Martin, Tasha (Nick) Berry, Nathan Best, Jayme Best, Brook (Tony) O’Hair, Troy Best, Stephanie (Brian) English, B.J. (Rebecca) Urquhart, and Amber Clark; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 1 - 2pm.
