Mr. James "Goat" Hubert Hollis Jr, 91, a resident of Brantley, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Andalusia Manor on Monday, November 28th, 2022. A celebration of Goat's life will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, November 30th, at Brantley United Methodist Church with Rev. Hunter Pugh officiating and Turners Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the Bethany Center there at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service.
Goat was a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of Brantley High School before going on to play football for one year at Troy State University. After that year, he decided he'd much prefer to be at the University of Alabama so he transferred and pledged at Phi Gamma Delta fraternity & thoroughly enjoyed his years there. He would continue to be a lifetime supporter of the Alabama Crimson Tide for the rest of his life. He earned his Bachelor's in Business there in Tuscaloosa, but, more importantly, he also met the love of his life, Peggy Shannon, there. They would marry and go on to raise a beautiful family together back in his hometown, after a brief stop at Fort Jackson in South Carolina where he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the United States Army.
Once back home in Brantley, Goat joined his family business, Brantley Bank and Trust, where he eventually became the bank president and expanded their reach beyond Crenshaw County. He met so very many of his fellow citizens during his decades at the bank and was a beloved fixture in his community for the rest of his life. He was a dedicated member of Brantley United Methodist Church and Luverne Rotary Club, as well as being a Paul Harris Fellow. In what free time he had, Goat was an avid outdoorsman. There were few things he loved more than spending time with the friends he made while hunting and fishing. He truly cherished every single friend he made during those times they spent together.
Goat was as strong-willed and determined as anyone with that particular nickname could possibly be, but those traits served him so very well during his life. He excelled in whatever he did, and did it all with such dignity and class. He was especially proud of the time he was named Crenshaw County Citizen of the Year, and it was certainly much deserved. Goat was a character first and foremost. Once you met him, you'd never forget him, especially if you had the pleasure of hearing a few of his great stories as no one could tell one quite as well as him. Above all, he loved his family. He enjoyed sharing his outdoors activities with his eventual grandsons, but he was especially grateful in later years to have had daughters because "they are the ones who take care of you." Goat lived a wonderful and long life, but few have made such an impact on the lives of others and leaves behind such remarkable legacy.
Goat was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Sr &Winnie Turner Hollis, and sister, Winnie Faye Hollis Lee. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Peggy Shannon Hollis; their daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hollis (Kevin) Walker and Shannon Hayslip; grandchildren, Stuart (Maggie) Mash, Margaret Mash (Jeff) Holm, Lee (Katie) Hayslip, Max Hayslip, and Meg Hayslip; great-grandchildren, Lizzie Holm, Thomas Holm, Hollis Holm, and Sylvie Hayslip; and sister, Abbie Lou Bryan.
Active pallbearers will be Stuart Mash, Stuart Mash Jr, Lee Hayslip, Max Hayslip, Kevin Walker, Bobby Hollis, Tom Sanders, Tom Russell, Tony Walden, Willie Smith, Johnny Wayne Walker, Stanford Barnes, John Williams, and Za Burnett.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial donations be made to Brantley United Methodist Church.
