James "Red" Miles Horn, 56, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his newly-built dream home on Thursday, October 30th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services for James will be held at 12 PM on November 3rd, at South Luverne Baptist Church with Brother Stae Sanders & Brother Jeff Stroud officiating. Interment will then follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Goshen with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10:30 - Noon.
James, affectionately known as "Red" to just about everyone, was a proud graduate of Luverne High School's Class of 1987. Afterward, he worked his way up to a service foreman for South Alabama Electric Cooperative during his 36 years of hard work. He loved what he did, even climbing those towering power poles all the time, and he absolutely loved the people he worked with. In his free time, he was a remarkable baseball and softball player, always enjoying time spent with friends playing sports he loved. James was also quite nimble on a pair of water skis. Farming and horses were also beloved hobbies of his over the years. Obviously, anything that kept him outside were favorite activities of his. On Saturdays in the Fall, you'd find him cheering on his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide on the gridiron.....not with his beloved mama though. Oh, not because they cheered for different teams, but his quite vocal frustration during games clashed with her eternal optimism!
There's rarely existed a better role model for handling adversity with a smile on your face and nary a complaint than James. Facing chronic, serious health conditions from an early age, you certainly would never know it just from your interactions with him. They certainly didn't impede his approach to life over the years and he never let them keep him down. Showing remarkable strength in the face of lifelong adversity, James was such an inspiration to everyone who knew him over the years as he took the slings and arrows of life with a great sense of humor. This man's man also had a heart of gold for the struggles of others and, while he pinched every penny when it came to spending on himself, he was still so generous when it came to helping those in need without advertising it. Above all, he was a devoted brother, uncle, and friend who loved the people in his life with all of his heart. Words cannot express how much he was loved by all those who knew him and how much he will be missed, but they will never forget the legacy of his remarkable life he leaves behind.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Jeanette Rhodes Horn. He is survived by his loving siblings, Barbara (Jimmy) Free, Jeff Schofield, Mary Horn (Jeff Warren), Dusty (Lisa) Horn, Dickie (Dianne) Horn, and Claire (Donald) Miller; nieces, Charlsi (Andy) Wright and Tori (Tyler) Sanchez; nephew, Chase Free; great-nieces & nephews, Tylen Sanchez, Harper Allen, Kase Wright, Lucas Wright, and Brayden Free; and numerous other extended family members and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Tony Greer, Billy Ray Lester, Hunter DeVoss, Mike Chirico, Whitmon "Bud" Merritt, Jody Shirley, Corey Dunseith, and Trey Dillon. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Tranum, David Lester, Jason Lester, and his cherished co-workers at the SAEC.
The family would like to extend their everlasting gratitude to Dr. Tompkins, his staff, and the wonderful nurses of Aveanna Hospice in Greenville for everything they did.
