James V. Humphrey

July 1, 1931 — June 20, 2026

James V. Humphrey, 94, a resident of Goshen, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Kelley's Place in Enterprise on Saturday, June 20th, 2026. A graveside service for Jim will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, June 24th, in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Goshen with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing the service. Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at the service time.

Jim was born in Hillsboro, South Carolina in 1931, in the early days of the Great Depression. He married the love of his life in January of 1952, shortly before he enlisted with the United States Air Force. He bravely served his country in a multitude of military conflicts, including those in Korea, Indochina, and Vietnam. He ultimately retired in 1972 at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt). He then went to work for the Winter Park Fire Department in Florida before moving to Goshen, Alabama. He kept a house in Florida due to his devotion to bass fishing for many years. And I'm not stretching the truth when I say he was truly devoted to this particular hobby. Jim had all the accoutrements that you could ever want or need when it came to bass fishing. If you needed it, I guarantee he had it. In Goshen, Jim loved tinkering with any and everything, and could fix just about anything he set his mind to. He also kept up a bountiful vegetable garden for many years whose produce he was always happy to share with family and friends. Overall, Jim was just a singular personality who could be an acquired taste for many, but he lived his life on his terms and always, as Sinatra said, "did things my way."

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife 65 years, Cora L. "Cokey" Humphrey; their sons, James V. Humphrey and Jeffrey D. Humphrey; parents, Boyd Humphrey & Leona Hayes; and siblings, Wade Humphrey, Clyde Humphrey, and Sissy Humphrey. He is survived by his loving daughter, Jo Lashley; special niece, Kathy Owens; and numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The United States Air Force will be providing military honors and serving as pallbearers for SMSgt Humphrey.
