Janice Marie Holmes, 73, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 22nd, 2023 while surrounded by her family. Funeral services for Janice will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 26th, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Sanders and Chaplain Darryl Bates officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, September 25th, from 6 to 8 PM.
Janice embraced life with gusto, charm, and good humor. She knew the value that lays in the simpler things...though a little costume jewelry never hurt! She was a gifted seamstress who spent much of her working career at Luverne Slacks Factory, but her most treasured job was that as a single mother to her beautiful baby girl. Life at that time was never easy, but she did a phenomenal job shouldering the job to make sure her daughter was never deprived of anything she truly needed. During those times Janice not only proved how strong she could be, but that she could handle whatever life threw her way with grace and love. She was a wonderful role model for her Sunday School classes and there were few things she enjoyed more than teaching the children at Fleetwood Baptist Church about the love of Jesus Christ and giving them a hope of Heaven. In fact, she actually taught Rev. Sanders as a child and never had a doubt that he would grow up to preach the gospel. Her daughter, though, was her entire world for so many years, until she was replaced by her own son, because, as well all know, grandchildren are just a little bit more special! There was absolutely nothing she loved more than being "Nanna" to her beloved grandson and he thrived under all of her love and attention.
Janice was famous within her family for her forthright, and perhaps slightly blunt, personality. You learned quickly to never assume she was asleep or too distracted to hear what you were saying, because as soon as you did, she'd pop right into the conversation like she was in the middle of it the whole time! She was always quick with a quip or joke, and she had a gift for knowing just when a serious moment needed a little levity to make everyone feel better. In her free time, she loved classic TV shows like Little House on the Prairie and Andy Griffith, but no one beat the Golden Girls in her book. She could watch the same episodes again and again and still find Sophie and the other Girls just as funny as she had the first time. She was also a phenomenal cook. No one made better dressing or hush puppies than Janice, and she loved some good catfish too. Her door was always open to family and friends when she was cooking, or rather she was insistent that her brothers or anyone else close by better bring a dish for her to fill up when she was in the kitchen! Above all, she was a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and aunt who loved her family more than life itself. There was no one she'd rather spend time with and they cherished every single moment they had with her, and would give anything for just a few more.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Clifton "Cliff" and Voncile King Holmes. She is survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Marie & Robert Little; adored grandson, David Little; siblings, Verdie Holmes, Reba Motes, Henry Holmes, Newton (Doris) Holmes, and Hannis Holmes; nieces, Regina Brooks, Donna Powell, and Sherry Holmes; grand-nephews, Jason Brooks and Chad Powell; special cousins who were close to her heart, Mary Slawson & Jessie Holmes; and her caregiver who became an adopted family member and special friend, Voncille Green.
Active pallbearers will be Chad Powell, Tucker Powell, Tristan Missildine, Jerry Brooks, Gary Mount, and Jessie Holmes.
