Jean Sport Brooner

November 12, 1930 — April 20, 2022

Marbury

Mrs. Shirley Jean Sport Brooner, 91, a resident of Marbury, Alabama and formerly of Dozier, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. A graveside service for Mrs. Brooner will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 23rd, in Kimbro Cemetery in Dozier with Brother Stae Sanders officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:30 - 1:30 PM.

Mrs. Brooner was an education technician with the United States Civil Service, which included working with the national JROTC program out of Maxwell Air Force Base for many years. Thanks to her work on base she met and married the love of her life, Clifford Brooner. His active duty service led them to Europe where they were stationed in England, France, and Germany over the years. During their time there, they were also able to indulge in traveling all over Europe from London to Norway. They ultimately returned to Montgomery, and Mrs. Brooner would retire from the Civil Service after over 30 years of exemplary service.

During their 64 years (and one day) together, Mr. & Mrs. Brooner thoroughly enjoyed every experience they encountered. During their time stationed in South Carolina, they often took their family on fishing and camping trips. In her retirement, Mrs. Brooner also enjoyed tending to her garden. Her favorite thing in the world, though, was simply spending time with her family. She had an expansive view of “family” as well because hers encompassed many of the cherished friends they made throughout their lives. She would take any excuse to host a family gathering, preferring informal potluck events that prioritized making cherished memories of time together. Those are memories that her loved ones will continue to treasure for many years to come.

Mrs. Brooner was preceded in death by her parents, Lemuel Green & Cumi Kimbro Sport, and sister, Joyce Sport Faison. She is survived by her loving husband, Clifford Eddie Brooner; their son & daughter-in-law, Steven Sport & Rebecca Elaine Black Brooner; grandchildren, Amanda Elaine Brooner (Philip) Davis and Steven Matthew (Rachel) Brooner; and great-grandson, Steven Wade Davis.
