Mr. Jerry "Potsy" Holladay, 73, a lifelong resident of Rutledge, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at home, surrounded by his children, and is now in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Funeral services for Mr. Holladay will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, August 15th, at Siloam Church with Brother Jason Holladay officiating. Interment will follow in Siloam Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Jerry was born to Ethell & Louise Bolling Holladay on August 14, 1947 in the farming community of Horse Creek. He first attended Ivy Creek School, where he was affectionately given the nickname "Potsy." He later attended Luverne High School where he played varsity football. Potsy was a modest man who humbly dedicated his life to farming and taking care of his family. His unassuming and quiet nature made him a man of few words; however, his wittiness and dry sense of humor were loved by all who knew him. For generations, the Holladay name has been synonymous with farming, and Potsy was a proud sixth-generation farmer who was a tremendous steward of the land.
When he was not tending to his land, he enjoyed riding a good Tennessee walking horse, riding in a wagon behind a well-trained mule, or preparing doves for his family and friends after a successful dove hunt. He was also an avid outdoors-man who loved to hunt and fish. He had several four-legged friends and, to keep it simple, he named all of his mules "Bill" and all of his dogs "Fred." Above all, Potsy carried the title of farmer well. Paul Harvey once stated, "God looked down on his planned paradise, and said, 'I need a caretaker.' So God made a farmer." Jerry was indeed a caretaker of the land his entire life as a good and faithful servant. His faith, knowledge of the land, and strong work ethic were passed down to his children and grandchildren, and the legacy of Holladay Farms will carry on for many generations to come.
Mr. Holladay was preceded in death by his son, Josh Brandon Holladay, and his parents. He is survived by his children, Jason (Ashley) Holladay and Carrie (David) Whetstine; grandchildren, John Robert Holladay, Anna Katherine Holladay, Jeremiah Holladay, and Josiah Holladay; siblings, Jeanette (James) Smith and Cliff (Shirley) Holladay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers will be John Robert Holladay, Jeremiah Holladay, Josiah Holladay, Sammie "PeeWee" Gregory, Jessie Gregory, and Dr. Alan Young.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Miss Roddie Graham for her loving care and compassion for both Jerry and his children during his final days here on Earth. They would also like to express their gratitude to Comfort Care Hospice of Greenville, Alabama.
The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1 - 2 PM.
