Joan Messick, 78, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Thursday, September 4th, 2025. A celebration of Joan's life has not been scheduled yet at this time.
Joan was a true and generous Christian woman who always tried to live her life as Jesus commanded. The kind of woman who never failed to step up and help her fellow man in times of need whether it be food, clothing, or shelter. While she worked as a seamstress for much of her career, her heart belonged to her kitchen where she loved to spend hours baking the best desserts and pastries you could ever hope to eat. In fact, she loved it so well that she became a certified pastry chef, so you know everything she made was mouthwateringly delicious! Joan also enjoyed tending to her beautiful and bountiful garden outside and the pets who were constantly at her side. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished every single moment she was blessed to share with her family and friends, knowing the Lord never promises us tomorrow. The world has lost a bright and shining light, but Joan's legacy will always be that her heart was as wide and welcoming as an ocean for all those who needed her love, grace, and faith.
Joan was preceded in death by her grandson, Coy Messick; parents, James Coy & Verla Bell Stephens Armstrong; and brother, Jack Armstrong. She is survived by her beloved children, Johnny Simmons, Jimmy Simmons, Joey (Shelley) Messick, and Marie (Johnathan) Cook; grandchildren, Alex Motes and Emily Dorsey; sisters, Maryann Richburg and Linda Faye (Abe) Bowman; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
