John David "JD" Johnson, 83, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Saturday, November 25th, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM at the Luverne Methodist Church on Thursday, November 30th, with Rev. Bobby Weeks officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
JD was born on September 25, 1940, to James Cullen and Jimmie Lois Gibson Johnson. He grew up in Rutledge, Alabama with his five siblings and was a proud member of Luverne High School Class of 1958. He spent his working career with the State of Alabama as a Federal Produce Inspector until his retirement in 2005.
JD had a personality like no other. He never met a stranger and could fill any room with joy and laughter. He loved entertaining his friends and, boy, at the knowledge he possessed. JD was also a master carpenter and loved to build in his earlier years. Rather than simply hiring out a job around the house, he was determined that he handle everything himself because no one could do it better than him. You better believe that his children were recruited to be his assistants from a fairly young age and learned many valuable lessons working alongside their father, for which they remain eternally grateful. In fact, over the last four months, he "supervised" the work at his new home every single day to ensure that everything was done exactly according to his specific guidelines! Often, the entire area looked like a used car lot because all of his friends made a habit of stopping in just to chat with him. Like many of his generation, JD never let anything go to waste, so you could be assured that, if you asked him if he had something, his response was going to be, "Yeah! I got a brand new one," and he did. Most of all, he was an amazingly special person, and cherished his role as a father to his three children. Even better, he loved when they made him "Papa" to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Heaven just received another special person who loved the Lord deeply.
JD was preceded in death by his parents, James Cullen Johnson and Jimmie Lois Gibson Johnson; his brother, Joe Wayne; and brother-in-law, Mike Morgan. He is survived by his three children, Vicki (Mark) Knox, Ashley Johnson, and Chris (Leigh) Johnson; grandchildren, Suzanne (Tim) Lowery, Caroline (Spud) Lynn, Andrew (Hannah) Johnson, Ashlyn (Houston) Mabray, Chase Johnson, Anna Leigh (Cade) Kilcrease, and Baleigh Johnson; great-grandchildren, Charleigh, Isaac, Amy, & Nicole Lowery, Lila Grace & Knox Lynn, Ellie Butler, Hayes & Hudson Johnson, and Margot Kilcrease; siblings, Jimmy (Connie) Johnson Jr, Cheryl (Joe) Bagents, Janice Morgan, and Jerry (Kris) Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Glenwood Methodist Church.
