Mrs. Judith "Judy" Sue Capps Moore, 83, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home while surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023. A graveside service for Judy will be held at 2 PM on Friday, April 21st, in Providence Cemetery with Rev. Greg Sanders officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 PM.
Judy grew up in the Glenwood Baptist Church and attended Glenwood School until she entered high school in the 9th grade and proudly graduated from Luverne High School in 1957. She met the love of her life, Phillip Moore, in 1953, and nothing would deter them from getting married immediately after high school, whether the state of Alabama thought they were old enough or not! From that time forward, they established a loving and warm environment to raise their family in here in Luverne. Judy became certified to work as the Director of Medical Records at what is now Crenshaw Community Hospital and spent many years working there. Even after her retirement, she never stopped staying active in her favorite "job," as Mama and Grammy!
Judy and Phillip were part of the founding parents of Crenshaw Christian Academy and Judy put her hard work into making sure the school was ready to educate its future students for many years to come. She always held the school close in her heart as her children and grandchildren attended there. She even worked as the school secretary for a time and was always a go-to substitute teacher all the way through her grandsons' years there. Both her children and grandchildren could rest assured that no matter what activity they were participating in, from band to gymnastics, basketball, and football, Mama or Grammy was guaranteed to be there to support them in every way possible.
Judy dedicated herself to her family above all else. She was a phenomenal wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother throughout the years. All children were welcome in her home and expected to treat it as their home. Her kitchen was always open, not only to her own children and grandchildren, but also their friends who often considered her a bonus mother or grandmother. Grammy's house was especially the place to be because she never failed to have snacks after they went swimming and could easily be convinced to prepare favorite treats for them, particularly her beloved fried cornbread which was already ready on the stovetop whenever boys like Chad Davis, Christopher Smith, and Michael Russell dropped in! However, don't think you were going to run all over her just because she loved you. She had a switch on her refrigerator to keep folks in line, something her grandson Jonathan has not forgotten!
Judy's house was the place to be around the holidays too because she was always ready to go all out. Her children and grandchildren were always well-dressed, and if she couldn't find it, she could very well make it herself! Not only did she often make Halloween costumes for her little ones, she was always ready to be in on the fun with her own costume as she handed out candy. And Christmas was serious business! Judy spent weeks planning and then decorating her home for the holiday. She especially cherished her Christmas village and favorite collectible ornaments over the years. She also loved collecting beautiful birdhouses for everyday decorations to cheer up her home. In the free time you might be surprised she had, she loved to keep her mind active for as long as possible through reading and crossword puzzles. She and Phillip loved to travel all over the United States after retirement, and, honestly, as long as she was in a car going somewhere she was happy. However, her favorite special place was the beach where she could walk along the shoreline collecting shells.
Judy was not only a doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but that love also extended to beloved canine companions like Spanky. Her family could probably write a book on just how special and wonderful she was, and they are blessed with so many memories to cherish now as she continues to live on in their hearts and minds.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lemuel & Frances Warren Capps. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Phillip N. Moore; children, Lynn Smith (Donnie "Boots" Killingsworth), Susan "Missy" Moore, and Dr. Phillip Anthony Moore; grandchildren, Drew (Dana) Smith and Jonathan (Tristan) Smith; great-grandchildren, Sam Smith and Katie Smith; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Drew Smith, Jonathan Smith, Tristan Missildine, Ted Vaughan, Todd Vaughan, and Jeremy Vaughan. Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Bagwell, Russell Bagwell, Chad Davis, Christopher Smith, and Richard Barlow.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Able Home Care Service, Southern Comfort, and Enhabit Hospice for their tender, loving care of Judy in her final days. They would have been lost without such wonderful sitters like Victoria Armstrong, Adrienne Sullivan, Jandolyn "JJ" Barber, and Shelby Hattaway, and a special thank you goes to Bri Holston and Rachael Smith.
They request that memorial donations be made to either the Glenwood First Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association in Dothan, Alabama.
