Mrs. Julia Campbell Witherington, 97, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Luverne Health & Rehabilitation on Monday, July 26, 2021. A graveside service for Mrs. Witherington will be held at 2 PM on Friday, July 30th, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Brother Stae Sanders officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mrs. Witherington was one of the oldest of thirteen children, so she learned early on the value in caring for one's family. She grew up as a hard, industrial worker and that work ethic never really stopped. Early into raising her own family, she went to work as a seamstress at Luverne Slacks. At home, she was a terrific cook with her family easily considering her homemade biscuits the best in the world. After her children were grown, she turned her cooking skills into a new business, opening up her own restaurant, The Hickory Pit, which she operated for many years until her retirement. In the free time that her retirement finally allowed her, she learned to love solving crossword puzzles, plus she had always enjoyed watching baseball with her husband, especially the Atlanta Braves. There is no doubt that she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her family always meant the world to her, and they felt the same way. She will be sorely missed, but they are comforted in that she lived and long and fruitful life.
Mrs. Witherington was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Guy Witherington; their daughter, Gwendolyn Jones; her parents, Lee & Melinda Wolfe Campbell; and several siblings. She is survived by two children, Carolyn Raybon and Billy (Brigitte) Witherington; grandchildren, Keith Raybon, Kay Pinckard, Jennifer Lorentz, Jason Jones, Melinda Egging, and Billy Witherington Jr; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and siblings, Billy Campbell, George Campbell, James Campbell, Susie Watson, and Jean Praux.
Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at the service time.
