Mr. J.W. McGough, 73, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away at Jackson Hospital on Thursday, February 16th, 2023. Funeral services for J.W. will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, February 19th, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Sandy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Union Baptist Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday for one hour prior to the service.
There has rarely been a man as singularly talented as J.W. when it came to anything mechanical. During his lifetime he was a welder, fabricator, painter, and body work technician for the auto industry. His talents weren't limited to the auto industry, however, as he also spent plenty of time as a carpenter and HVAC installer. J.W. never truly rested either. He might recline in front of the TV at night, but it was guaranteed that he was using that time to work out a plan to accomplish whatever task he had to handle the next day. He was also very detail-oriented and usually took charge of whatever project he needed to accomplish. He definitely believed in keeping both his mind and body active as much as possible.
You never had to guess where you stood with J.W. He was always forthright and honest, even to a fault. That's actually a rare gift these days and one that those who knew and loved him appreciated, even if he was telling truths they didn't want to hear. Above all, J.W. was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He had a large family, but they always remained close-knit and knew they could count on each other. Like everyone else on this earth, J.W. was not perfect, but he was a good man who truly loved his family and friends throughout his life. He has left them far too soon, but they know he is happy to be reunited with Nita and Michael in Heaven.
J.W. was preceded in death by his loving companion, Nita McGough; their son, Michael Rayborn; parents, Claude & Bea Powell McGough; and brother, Don McGough. He is survived by his sons & their spouses, David & Tyler McGough, Daryl & Shannon McGough, and Scottie & Brittany McGough; grandchildren, Tyler (Lorin) McGough, Trent (Sydney) McGough, Laken (Ryan) Jones, Kaitlyn (Jake) Jordan, Chandley McGough, Paisley McGough, Ryan McGough, Paige Kelley, Kadee McGough, Hunter McGough, Caylee McGough, Regan Burrage, and Haley Burrage; great-grandchildren, Carter McGough, Addison McGough, Charlotte McGough, Wrenley Jordan, Brooks McGough, Mattie Leighton McGough, Rylen Jones, and River Jones; siblings, Ricky (Betty Jo) McGough, Kenny (Debbie) McGough, Raymond (Kathy) McGough, Robert (Cathy) McGough, Sue McGough, Dan (Tanya) McGough, and Patty (Roger) Tindoll; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Active pallbearers will be Ricky McGough, Kenny McGough, Robert McGough, Dan McGough, Raymond McGough, and Roger Tindoll. Robert Teague will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
The family requests that anyone attending the service who has a classic car, please bring it with you because J.W. would have loved to see them all gathered together! Also, they ask that any memorial donations be made to the Union Cemetery Fund.
