Lagettie Sikes Leger

August 18, 1940 — July 19, 2023

Greenville

LaGettie Sikes Leger, 82, a resident of Greenville, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, July 19th, 2023. A celebration of Gettie's life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 5th, at Walnut Street Church of Christ with Brothers Charles Box, Brother Ricky Bagents, and Brother Richard Sport officiating.

Gettie worked as a beautician for well over 60 years and actually continued to style a few loyal clients to the very end. She was well-known in her community for her generous spirit and driving need to help as many as she could, a trait she definitely inherited from her grandmother, Mama Sikes. Gettie didn't know the meaning of the word "rest"! She would go until she couldn't go anymore, whether that was in running her own salon for most of her life or tending to her yard with such tender care. She was most certainly one of the strongest-willed people you could ever meet and she attacked every task with as much determination as any drill sergeant! She was also fiercely loyal to her family and friends, and those friends she considered family. Gettie was one of a kind and unforgettable in so many ways. In fact, you wouldn't be incorrect to liken her to a force of nature, but you would definitely be a fortunate soul if she took up your cause! Above all, however, she was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, as well as a dearly loved member of her church family.

Gettie was a longtime member of Walnut Street church of Christ and truly adored her church family there. She was well-known for her daily habit of reading her Bible, yet another trait she picked up from her beloved Mama Sikes. There are few people who were as determined to reach Heaven as she was and she wanted to take everyone with her. She never stopped working to help others and spread the gospel to all she met. She was such a special soul and the world has truly lost a treasure that can never be replaced. Words cannot express how much she will be missed by her family and friends, but they all take comfort in the knowledge that she now has what she always wanted most of all, a home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is celebrating with the loved ones who went on before her and cannot wait for all those she loved to join her.

Gettie was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Leger; parents, B.E. & Ida Lou Beasley Sikes; and grandparents, Elliott & Clara Lou Everage Sikes. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lynn Leger Wesson; grandchildren, Garret C. (Haley) Wesson and Shannon (Steven) Warlick; great-grandson, Henry; siblings, Charles "Bo" Sikes and Anne (Richard) Sport; nieces, Amelia (Scott) McNaughton and Elizabeth (Troy) Tindal; nephews, Kevin (Sandi) Sport, Michael Sport, and Scott (Emily) Sikes; and a host of cousins and other extended family members and friends.
