Larry Lane Register, 77, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, July 20th, 2024. Funeral services for Larry will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, July 24th, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Highland Home with President Michael Nimmer officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 AM.
Larry proudly served his country with the United States Army when called to serve in the Vietnam Conflict where he displayed such exceptional valor in the field that the military awarded him their third-highest decoration, the Silver Star. Back home in the States, Larry went to work as an engineer for the CSX Railroad Line and turned in 34 years of dedicated service before he retired. In his free time, he loved classic cars and drag racing for his entertainment. Of course, come every Saturday in the Fall, you could bet he was going to be cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide to victory on the gridiron.
There was no better storyteller than Larry...though, fair warning, he wasn't one to let the truth interfere with a great tale! Needless to say, he was a born entertainer and guaranteed to always be the life of the party. It helped that he had a phenomenal sense of humor, a contagious smile and life, and a pathological need to aggravate the fire out of anyone he actually liked. And there was no one he better loved to aggravate than his children and grandchildren, probably because he loved them best. You see, "Big Daddy," as he was affectionately known far and wide thanks to those same grandchildren, had an absolute heart of gold. He especially had a gift for making every single member of his family feel special. In fact, if you ask any of his grandchildren who his favorite grandchild was, their answer would be themselves. That is truly a remarkable and rare gift to have, and Larry was exceptionally generous with it like he was with everything else he had. He was truly an incomparable kind of man and meant the world to all those who knew and loved him so very much. He was the rock his family was built upon and that foundation he laid in showing each of them how to live in a way to make this world a better place will keep that foundation strong for many more generations to come.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lavon & Mary Beasley Register, and daughter-in-law, Cheri Register. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Brenda Jeffcoat Register; their sons, Brent (Lisa) Register, Brian "Booger" Register, and Bear (Whitney) Register; grandchildren, Taylor P. (David) Bailey, Taylor L. (Billy) Fuller, Dustin (Harleigh Collum) Register, TyLynn Register, Shelby Register, Natalee Register, Brent "Boody" Register Jr, Sydney Register, Sarah Register, Maloree Register, and Sawyer Register; great-grandchildren, Greyson Fuller and Kynslee Fuller; brother, Jerry (Mary Lou) Register; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Jeff Register, Josh Register, Brendon Missildine, Dustin Register, Blake Missildine, and Brent Register Jr.
