Granny. Granny Jean. Mama Jean. Mom. She was known by many names, but to all of her family, she was someone they could always count on. Jean was the toughest lady you could ever find. Lord knows she came up in hard times and faced trials and troubled times throughout her life, more than anyone should ever have to endure, but somehow, she always kept going. She taught her family what strength really looks like-not because life was always easy, but because no matter what life put in front of her, she never gave up.
One of the ways Jean showed her love was through food. There was nothing she enjoyed more than feeding her family, and, if you knew Granny Jean, you knew about her cornbread, camp stew, and potato salad every Fourth of July. For more years than they could count, her children remember piling up in the cars along with her siblings and their grown children to head to the barn dance on Friday nights....where Jean never failed to dance the night away to her favorite country songs. That was followed by one big spend-the-night party at Jean's house where the children were blessed to wake up in the morning to the smell of bacon sizzling and homemade biscuits baking. The day was then spent in fellowship with each other, reliving the best stories and memories, followed by a cookout....and then back to the barn to do it all over again! Oh, and the spread this woman laid out for her family on Thanksgiving would make anyone's mouth water as they quickly filled up a plate with her dressing and other Southern staples. Those recipes weren't just food-they truly were part of family, part of their memories, and part of the way she took care of each and every one of them.
Jean loved to travel. She loved getting out, seeing places, spending time with the people she loved, and especially visiting a good restaurant. Believe me, if you wanted a companion for anything, from a school event to a mundane trip to the grocery store, you better ask Mama Jean because she never turned down an invitation. But as much as she loved going places, there was always something comforting about knowing she would be right there at home when her loved ones came back. She was how they described "home" in their hearts, just seeing Granny one her beloved front porch swing reassured them that everything was going to be okay.
Jean was blessed with a true servant's heart, and she spent her life taking care of everyone else. She cared for sick children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She held crying babies, stayed when someone needed her, and somehow always knew how to make things better. She never said no. If someone needed something, Granny found a way to make it happen. She was a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, a secret-keeper, and a reliable alibi!! And she never forgot a birthday. There was always a card waiting. It may seem like something small, but those little things were Granny's way of saying, "I love you. I'm thinking about you. You matter to me."
She taught her loved ones to be strong. She taught them to keep going when life gets hard, to take care of your people, and to love your family fiercely. And one of the greatest things they can do to honor her is to carry those lessons with them through the rest of their lives. Words cannot express how much she will be missed by all those who loved her, but their hearts live in thankfulness right now. Thankful for the years they were blessed to have with her. Thankful for every meal, every trip, every conversation, every act of love, and every memory she gave them. Thankful that they got to call her Granny, Mama Jean, and Mom. However, they can find comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering. She has finished her earthly journey. She is at peace, and she is finally home with the loved ones who went before her. Their hearts are broken because to have to say goodbye, but they know this goodbye is not forever. "Until we meet again, Granny, we'll carry you with us-in the recipes you taught us, in the strength you gave us, in the way we care for one another, and in every memory we hold close."
