Lonnie Chesser

November 5, 1945 — December 30, 2023

Lapine

Lonnie Chesser, 78, a resident of Lapine, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 30th, 2023 at Mobile Infirmary. Funeral services for Lonnie will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, January 4th, at Magnolia Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Francisco officiating. He will then be interred beside his beloved wife in Magnolia Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 3rd, from 6 to 8 PM.

Lonnie proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict where his service was distinguished with both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was blessed to survive the landmine that blew up the vehicle he was traveling in that resulted in the Purple Heart. He was then honorably discharged at four years of service with the rank of sergeant. All through his life, he was the model of a hard-working, devout Christian who always cherished his relationship with his Lord and his church family at Magnolia Baptist Church. He was well-known and well-loved throughout his community for his outgoing and friendly personality. He was not the loud and boisterous type, but his quiet love for his fellow man shined brightly for everyone to witness.

Lonnie was the best brother anyone could ask for as he was always looking out for all of his siblings and extended family. If you wanted to spent time with him, you were probably going to have to either join him with his usual breakfast crew every morning at It Don't Matter or find a comfy spot on the couch to watch one of his favorite Westerns with him. If you really wanted to get on his good side, you'd take him for some fried catfish at the Chicken Shack or scare up some Kentucky Fried Chicken for him. Above all, he was a truly devoted husband and father who cherished the two most important women in his life with all of his heart. Words cannot entirely capture how much he was loved by all those who knew and loved him, but they will find comfort in the knowledge that he is now safe and secure in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife, Ronnie Verline Petty Chesser; parents, George Julius & Sallie Mae Hall Chesser; and siblings, Joe Chesser, Leon Chesser, Ora Mae Fox, Margie Plemmons, John Tom Chesser, Adeline Godwin, Billy Chesser, and Fontel Chesser. He is survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Patricia Chesser & William Powell; siblings, Alvin Ray Chesser and Minnie Lee Royal; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Casey Petty, Cyle Petty, Cory Petty, Austin Stephens, Ronald Fox, and Josh Tompkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Stanley Boyd, Bubba Stubbs, Kenny McGough, Johnny Fox, and Curtis Flowers.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28
