COMPTON, Luther Quitman, 79, a resident of Germantown, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018. A graveside service for Mr. Compton will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 28, in Providence Cemetery with Rev. Tracy Martin officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Luther was born in Luverne, Alabama, on February 23, 1939 to Jessie and Oscar Compton, and he graduated from Brantley High School in 1957. He met his true love, Marcia Lucille Lee in Andalusia, Alabama. They were married on May 13, 1960 in Mobile, Alabama. They began their marriage and family in Moss Point, Mississippi. In 1971, Luther and Marcia moved to Gautier where they lived for 28 years and raised their children, Matt and Beth. It was in Gautier that, through Marcia’s devout faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, she led Luther to accepting Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized in 1978 at First Baptist Church in Gautier. As his faith and love for Jesus grew, he became a deacon of the church as well as Sunday School director. Luther worked for Mississippi Chemical for 32 years and had the highest of work ethics. In 1993, Luther and Marcia moved to Grenada, Mississippi where he worked for, and retired from, Newsprint South. They eventually made their way to Germantown, Tennessee where they lived in the Village of Germantown, a retirement community. Marcia passed away in 2011, after 51 years of marriage. Luther was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was always available for guidance and advice whenever needed, and he was fiercely protective of his family. He loved gardening and landscaping, and he took pride in his home. Though home was his favorite place to be, Luther loved visiting the mountains and dreamed of having his own cabin in the woods. Luther was an avid Alabama football fan, looking forward to the football season each fall. He was also a member of the National Guard in Luverne, Alabama. One of Luther‘s greatest accomplishments, outside of his family, was earning the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite, a prestigious and honorary degree. He was also a member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. Although this is a difficult time for Luther‘s family, they take comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his sweetheart, and they are rejoicing and praising their King together. He is survived by his two children, Robert Matthew (Michelle) Compton and Elizabeth Marie Compton (Randall) Spears; two grandchildren, Lauren Marie Compton and Scott Andrew Spears; and two sisters, Sarah Russell and Helen Moulton; and one brother, Billy Compton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM.
