Marco Torres Jr, Lieutenant Colonel Retired, United States Army, (LTC USA Ret.), 90, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. A funeral mass for LTC (Ret) Marco Torres will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 16th, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Troy with Father Chris Boutin presiding. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 AM until the service begins. They will also receive friends at Turners Funeral Home in Luverne on Friday, November 15th, from 5-7 PM.
Marco Torres was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. He graduated from Kohala High School in 1952 and completed his bachelor's degree in Tropical Agriculture at the University of Hawaii in 1956. While attending UH, Marco was in the Army ROTC program and upon graduation was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. During his 28 year career, he as an Infantryman, and, a helicopter and fixed wing pilot, serving at various postings in the US and overseas. He also served four tours in Vietnam during the US-Vietnam conflict. LTC Torres retired from the Army in 1984, settling down in Enterprise, AL, where he completed a Masters Degree in Education from Troy University, and went on to teach 8th grade Earth Science at Dolphin Middle School for 13 years. He was a contract teacher with Enterprise High School for a few more years, and finally moved to Luverne, AL in 2016.
Marco Torres wore many hats during his 90 years: He was a soldier, a teacher, a devout Catholic and servant of God (Knights of Columbus), a loving husband & family man, and a friend. Throughout his life, he had many loves: He loved God and his church; he loved his wife and his children, always wanting the best for them; he loved working in his yard and on the farm; he loved serving in the Army; he loved teaching. Moreover, Marco was an excellent cook and loved creating and eating good food: he never met a stranger; was very charitable, always helping those in need; and, he loved "holding court," always inviting others to join in to just "talk story".
Marco Torres was preceded in death by his parents, Marco Torres Sr & Emma Faisca Torres, and his loving wife of 65 years, Ann Lea Torres. He is survived by his three sisters, Genevieve Murphy, Carmen Woolford, and Alexa Francisco; his children, Marco Torres III, Theresa (Frank) Fuller, Michael (Kandi) Torres, Suzanne (John) Carlton, John (Irene) Torres, and Stephen (Kim Giles) Torres; grandchildren, Daniel Torres, Jonathan Torres, Cliff Torres, Christopher Hilburn, Jeffrey Hilburn, Mathew Hilburn, Justin Torres, Katie Dubon, Madison Carlton, Matthew Carlton, Brandi Perryman, Tyler Torres, Amanda Genau, Katie Fuller, Emily Fuller, Coleman Reed, and Conner Reed; and twelve great-grandchildren.
