Margueritte Martin Johnson

Mrs. Margueritte “Gete” Martin Johnson, 79, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, June 13, in Rock Hill Church of Christ with Brother John Dickerson and Brother Danny Rolling officiating. Interment will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery with Brother Guy Simmons officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Johnson, affectionately known as Gete for much of her life, was born and raised in Brooklyn, Mississippi. She graduated from Forest County Agricultural High School, where she was a member of the Brooklyn Belles Majorettes. The day after graduation, she married the love of her life, “Doc” Johnson. They later moved to Luverne, where they would raise their four children. Margueritte taught baton lessons at Luverne High School and served as president of the PTA for many years. She was also extremely supportive of the Luverne High School Marching Band. Margueritte excelled at sewing, not only making her family’s clothes but also clothes for neighbors and others. She worked as a supervisor at Vanity Fair for many years until she retired to help raise her beloved grandchildren. She was also a lifelong member of Rock Hill Church of Christ.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Doc Johnson; their son, Travis “Bubby” Johnson; parents, Versil and Doris Martin; and two sisters, Jaunita Howard and Susan Brahney. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Serita (Mike) Hill, Sonya Johnson, and Selena (Keith) Fowler; seven grandchildren, Sara Hill, Kelly Hill, R.T. Mount, Amber Jordan, Jake Jordan, Shea (Bud) Warner, and Keith (Brittney) Fowler; five great-grandchildren, Maggie Mount, Dalton Jordan, Ainsley, Emmalyn Jordan, Fowler Warner; two siblings, Ray (Joyce) Martin and Hope (Eddy) Henderson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Active pallbearers will be Andy Martin, Cristopher Pedersen, Gary Shirley, Jeremy Shirley, Jody Shirley, and Josh Littlefield. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Anderson, Dale Simmons, Guy Martin, and Danny Martin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Rock Hill Church of Christ, 4339 Quail Tower Road, Luverne, Alabama 36049. They will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10 - 11 AM.
