Mrs. Martha Bush Compton, 83, a resident of Brantley, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Luverne Health and Rehabilitation on Friday, March 28, 2020.
Mrs. Compton wore many hats throughout her life. In her professional career, she worked as a seamstress, and, later, became the first woman to be hired by Sears to travel around the country and set up their in-store displays. She also loved teaching dance lessons to girls from all over the Luverne and Andalusia area. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She truly enjoyed making a warm, loving home for her family, including making wonderful home-cooked meals. She will be sorely missed by all the loved ones she leaves behind.
Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas LaCliff Compton, and her parents, Walter Calvin and Willie Evelyn Bozeman Bush. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, P.L. Compton; their two children, Rickey Compton and Lisa (Mark) Johnston; five grandchildren, Jason Compton, Ethan (Lindsey) Compton, Sarah Compton, Zachary (Ashley) Johnston, and Caleb (Rebekah) Johnston; three great-grandchildren, Harrison Compton, Olivia Johnston, and Asher Johnston; and three siblings, Sue Helms, Julia (Steve) Wilson, and Jerry (Georgia) Bush.
A private graveside service will be held for the immediate family only due to the rules handed down by the State of Alabama during the current pandemic.
