Mrs. Mary Coggins Capps, 94, a lifetime resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Friday, September 10, 2021. A graveside service for Mrs. Capps will be held at 2 PM on Monday, September 13th, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Brother Stae Sanders officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne officiating.
Mrs. Capps worked for over 40 years with the Crenshaw County Commission, much of that time as the County Treasurer. She was also one of the original founding members of the Luverne Church of Christ and remained a faithful member of her beloved congregation and church family until the end of her days. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and tending to her garden. She was also an avid reader, and loved expressing her creative side through her cross-stitching and needlepoint. She was a longtime member of the Crenshaw County Historical Society and spent much of her spare time researching genealogy. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, sister, and aunt, who adored her family. She was well-known for her kindness and generosity of spirit. She epitomized everything a Christian woman is supposed to be, and she will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Capps was preceded in death by her dear husband, George Spencer Capps; their son, James "Jim" Spencer Coggins; parents, Percy "R.P." Sr & Eva Helms Capps; and three siblings, Frances Holliday, Percy Coggins Jr, and Jimmy Coggins. She is survived by her son, Thomas A. "Tommy" Capps; sisters, Sarah Isabell and Ramona Porter; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Active pallbearers will be Bobby Porter, Larry Coggins, Alan Coggins, William McDougald, Bobby Owens, and Dale Sanders.
Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at service time.
