Funeral services for Mattie will be held at 2 PM on Friday, May 31st, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Brother Dean Kelley officiating. Interment will then follow in Rocky Mount Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.
Mattie truly knew how to infuse every situation and relationship in her life with her own natural joy of life. Her natural setting was happy and friendly, which made her a welcome addition wherever she was. She was always going to be the first to help out whenever anyone needed it, whether it was a home-cooked meal or a babysitter. Those who were blessed with her delicious Southern cooking knew how fortunate they were as she never skimped on a feast and everything she made was done so with love so it was definitely delicious! Mattie also took tremendous pride in her home and even enjoyed keeping her yard lush and beautiful. Some of her favorite times were those she spent taking care of so many precious babies, both those in her family and others she loved like family. That love also extended to the animals she cared for over the years, especially her beloved dogs.
Mattie had a passion for good music and absolutely loved going to bluegrass festivals over the years. The Smoky Mountains also held a special place in her heart due to all of the good times she had there with her first husband, Sidney. Most importantly, she loved with her whole heart, especially when it came to her family. She truly cherished the times she spent with them. Lord knows she faced more loss than many endured during her lifetime, but it never caused her to waver in her love and empathy for others. That is a special gift, which is part of why this Granny meant the world to her family. She taught them how to approach life with joy and laughter in their hearts, how to face the worst slings and arrows life can throw at you, and how to always treat everyone, from friends to animals, with compassion and kindness. That is an incredible legacy to leave behind and one that her family and friends will cherish for the rest of their lives.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husbands, Sidney Posey and Woodrow Leslie; son, Larry Posey; son-in-law, Danny Wayne Register; and parents, W.E. and Fannie Cato Thomas. She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Posey Register; grandchildren, Brandon Register, Nicky Posey, and Tonya Posey (Cedric) McKenzie; great-grandchildren, Mattie Claire, Andi Grace, Aaron, and Jacob; brother, John Thomas; and other extended family members and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Brandon Register, Fred Schofield, Jacob Schofield, Cedric McKenzie, Aaron McKenzie, and Van McKenzie.
