Maurine Kelley

April 13, 1923 — January 26, 2021

Patsburg

Mrs. Maurine Kelley, 97, a resident of Patsburg, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at Luverne Health & Rehabilitation. A graveside service for Mrs. Kelley will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 29th, in Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Dunford Cole officiating and Turners Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Kelley spent 36 years working hard as a seamstress at Luverne Slacks until her retirement. In her free time, there were few things she loved more than whipping up any dish she pleased in her kitchen. She was famous for her homemade biscuits, which she shared with both her family and members of the Patsburg Hunting Club. Her red velvet cakes were the toast of her community as well, and anyone who received one, counted themselves fortunate. Mrs. Kelley also had a magnificent green thumb. She lovingly tended to her flowers during the summer, and she did her best to grow the largest tomatoes in Patsburg every summer.

She had a special relationship with her family physician, Dr. Charles Tompkins, and she made sure his office knew that she intended to see him and him alone during her appointments. Of course, she did so with all the southern gentility possible, as she kindly told them every time, “Now I see Dr. Tompkins. He’s my doctor.” She was also a faithful member of the Patsburg Baptist Church and adored her church family there. Her last few years were spent at Luverne Health & Rehabilitation, where she thoroughly enjoyed walking the halls to visit her fellow residents every day she was able to do so. Mrs. Kelley had a remarkably long life full of happiness and love, something her loved ones will always be grateful for as they cherish all the memories they made together.

Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by her husband, Paten Kelley; son, Jerry Kelley; six siblings, Joyce Young, Nina Kelley, E.C. Holley, Jack Holley, Bud Holley, and Powell Holley. She is survived by her three children, Sandra (David) Beverly, Gene Kelley, and Melvin (Betty) Kelley; four grandchildren, Paten (Jackie) Powell, Rickey (Mary) Kelley, Lisa Kelley, and Kayla (Robert) Fulton; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Powell, Tobey Powell, Chance Kelley, Kolter Fulton, and McKenzie Fulton.

Active pallbearers will be Walt Young, Rick Young, Farris Holley, Jeff Holley, David Markham, Mike Markham, and Rickey Kelley.
