Maynard O, Folmar, 79, a resident of Rutledge, Alabama, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Friday, October 13th, 2023. A celebration of his life will be held in his barn at a later date.
They just don't come any better or real than Maynard. He was the kind of man who loved his country enough that, even when offered a pass to avoid the draft due to his brothers' service, he still served his time with the United States Army and completed a tour in Vietnam. He endured one of our country's worst conflicts because he was the type who truly believed in during his duty without exception. Maynard was also a gifted diesel mechanic and worked in that industry for over 40 years until his retirement. There was nothing he couldn't work on and he loved nothing more than to spend the day piddling with something down at his barn. Shoot, his barn could wind up the best social hangout around some days as people often stopped to talk to him when they saw him out there. He became that "old fella down by the well" to many in the area, or "Just Maynard," but you knew you would get caught up on the news if you stopped by or just a friendly wave if you didn't have time to stop.
Maynard's great love was his only child and beloved daughter. He was an extremely devoted father throughout her life and they were as close as could be. He never once failed to put her needs first and was always available whenever he was needed. He was also blessed with a great sense of humor and used it often. Few could beat his witty remarks and comebacks, but you were welcome to try your best! Maynard thoroughly enjoyed spending times outdoors as well. It didn't matter if he was hunting, fishing, or gardening, as long as he was in the great outdoors, he was happy. He was an excellent gardener though and shared its bounty with family and friends quite often. He would even use his vacation time to go help his father-in-law, J.C., bring in his own crop every year. If he was going to "waste time" watching TV, it was going to be something like the GRIT channel which allowed him to watch all of his old favorite Westerns whenever he wanted to, but there was simply nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with family and friends over a cold PBR down at his barn. That was his happy place and where he'll always be remembered best!
Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, William & Smithie Cole Folmar; several brothers and sisters, and his "second" parents, J.C. & Dimple Haire. He is survived by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Lisa & John Motes; brother, Melvin (Sue) Folmar; special nieces, Wendy (Byron) Ward and Misty Owens; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
