Mildred Reddoch Athey

Mildred Reddoch Athey passed away on Thursday, December 27 just three weeks before her 102nd birthday. Funeral services will be held at the Ramer Methodist Church on Sunday, December 30, at 2PM. Visitation will be at the church from 1:00 to 2:00 PM.

Mildred Athey was born on January 21, 1917 in Luverne to Judge Irby Reddoch and Jimmie Claire Folmar Reddoch. She graduated from Luverne High School in 1935 and attended the University of Alabama for two years. In 1940, she married Thomas Whitfield Athey, Jr. and they
raised their family at Grady after moving there in 1947. Mildred was active in local school, civic, and genealogical organizations. She was a founding member of the Alabama Cattlewomen's Asso and a member of their Hall of Honor. In 1968, she was named a finalist for Alabama Mother of the Year. She was a longtime member of the Ramer Methodist Church. Family was always of the utmost importance to Mildred and throughout her life she kept close relationships with her siblings, cousins, and nieces and nephews.

Mildred Athey was predeceased by her husband; one son, John Reddoch Athey; her granddaughter, Sally Katherine Shepard; and her five siblings. She is survived by three of her children: Dr. Thomas Whitfield Athey III (Jean) of Brookeville, MD; Anne Athey Payne (Gillis) of Ramer AL; and Dr. Charles William Athey (Cynthia) of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: William Scott Shepard, Dr. Jennifer Blair Athey, Dr. Susan Carleton Athey, Bryan Whitfield Athey, John Crispin Athey, Stephanie Bingham Jarvis, and William Whitfield Athey. She was also the proud great-grandmother of 16 children. She also leaves a devoted friend and caregiver, Mrs. Lucile Pouncey.
