Paul Wilson King

Mr. Paul Wilson King, 79, a resident of Luverne, Alabama and formerly of Brantley, Alabama, passed away at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. A graveside service for Mr. King will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, October 22nd, in Mt. Zion Cemetery with Dr. Sam Tate officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. King spent many years selling life insurance for Liberty National before deciding to go into business for himself. He owned and operated King’s Discount Store in Brantley for over 20 years before retiring. He had numerous interests to fill his free time after retirement. He enjoyed collecting various knives, country music, and building birdhouses. He could often be found on his porch simply enjoying nature as he fed the birds that loved the houses he built them.

Mr. King was also a fan of the late Elvis Presley, and loved watching the Alabama Crimson Tide football team dominate on the field. He could typically be found every morning at Hardee’s as part of the usual “breakfast crew” there. He was so beloved that they even created a special biscuit just for him that was fittingly called the “Paul King” biscuit. Overall, there was nothing he loved more than his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved all of them more than life itself, and that love was returned just as strongly. His passing leaves an indelible mark in all of their lives, but they will cherish every precious memory they made with him.

Mr. King was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Lee Sr & Kathryn Wilson King; two brothers, James “Pete” (Mary) King Jr and John Warren King; and his brother-in-law, Davis Doggett. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jo Ann Knighten King; their four children, Sonya (Joey) Knox, Joey King (Shane Dyess), Paula (Ronnie) Gardner, and Micheal King; seven grandchildren, Brandy (John) May, Heather (Brandon) Acreman, Joseph (Jocelyn) Gardner, Katie (Dalton) St. Cin, Brittany (Sean) Smith, Dow (Michaela) Gardner, and Jolee Knox (Jon Stubbs); seven great-grandchildren, Amari, Sam, Seth, Henry, Lynley, Andrew, and Colin; his sister, Helen Doggett; sister-in-law, Bonnie Nell King; and several nieces & nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Ronald Hilburn, Donald Hilburn, Newton Holmes, Henry Holmes, Kent Folmar, and Willie Von Hilburn. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Gardner, Joey Knox, Shane Dyess, Joseph Gardner, and Dow Gardner.
