Robert Daniel Sport

September 30, 1939 — February 7, 2024

Brantley

Robert Daniel Sport, 84, a resident of Dozier, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7th, 2024, while surrounded by his family. Funeral services for Dan will be held at 2 PM on Friday, February 9th, at Dozier Baptist Church with Brother Marino Bolling officiating. He will then be laid to rest beside his beloved wife in Dozier Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Dan proudly served his country with the Army National Guard for over 30 years before his retirement with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was also a devout Christian throughout his life and loved his church family at Dozier Baptist Church where he not only served as deacon but also enjoyed singing with the choir. In his free time, Dan loved the quiet peace of a favorite fishing hole as well as the time he spent tending to his garden. Yet, he also was always ready for the speed and excitement of NASCAR and drag racing! At home, he could often be found devouring the latest Western novel he could get his hands on, enjoying some of his favorite classic country tunes, or cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturdays during the Fall.

Dan had a phenomenal sense of humor and there were few things he enjoyed more than making people laugh. He could usually be found entertaining family and friends (even if they were just "friends" he met that very day) with an unlimited supply of humorous stories. Above all, however, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who considered his family the greatest blessing the Good Lord ever gave him. He was the patriarch of his family, the man everyone turned to whenever they needed anything. His family cherished him just as much and words cannot express how deeply he will be missed by all of them. There will be comfort found, however, not only in the lifetime of memories they made together, but also the knowledge that he is now rejoicing in his reunion with his beloved wife in Heaven.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Vivian Louise Whiddon Sport; parents, Grover Fleming and Carrie Lou Blackmon Sport; and siblings, Tut (Bill) Meredith, Harold Sport, and Lenora (Martin) Wyatt. He is survived by his sons, Danny Sport and Michael (Sherry) Sport; grandchildren, Kevin (Shelby) Sport, Kristy (Marino) Bolling, and Katelyn Sport (Justin Rhodes); great-grandchildren, Barrett Grey Bolling and Ellery Blake Rhodes; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Kevin Sport, Justin Rhodes, Marino Bolling, Mickey Powell, Greg Sport, and Cliff Maddox. Honorary pallbearers will be John Campbell and Steven Kelley.
