Sadie Langford Jeffcoat, 91, a resident of Homewood, Alabama and formerly of Montgomery, passed away unexpectedly in her home at Brookdale Senior Living Facility. A graveside service for Sadie will be held at 2 PM on Monday, June 10th, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Rev. Neil Epler officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Family and friends will meet in the cemetery at the service time.
Sadie was truly a remarkable woman who became an inspiration to multiple generations of her family. She married her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life, Carrol Jeffcoat, at the tender age of 16 and, except for his years of service in the Vietnam Conflict, remained by his side throughout the seven decades of their life together. In fact, she was so determined to stay with him that she packed up their two girls under the age of 4 so they could all follow Carrol to Japan while he was stationed there. Given that involved a cross-country trip and taking a ship across the Pacific Ocean rather than just hopping on a plane, such an endeavor obviously took a great deal of strength and love. During Carrol's 25 years of service with the United States Army, they traveled all over the world from Japan to Germany and all over the United States and loved every new experience and adventure that came their way. After his retirement, they settled down in Montgomery and became active members of Frazer Church for many years.
During her free time, Sadie loved to admire all of the beauty she found in the world, from gorgeous flowers to the hummingbirds she enjoyed feeding. She also loved dancing and was a frequent fixture at the Thursday night dances at Brookdale. She was also a fantastic cook, especially after taking several cooking classes while they were in Germany. She was actually a very adventurous cook as she loved experimenting with different cuisines, though French fine dining always held a special place in her repertoire...and her family never once objected to being her guinea pigs in the kitchen! Sadie took immense pride in creating the warmest and most inviting home possible. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother throughout her life and, according to her grandchildren, Grandma always gave the BEST hugs. She certainly had the sweetest smile that could light up any room and the most infectious laugh. She was larger than life to all those who knew and loved her and they trusted her to mold and guide them over the years. Never doubt though that she could control a room without every uttering a single word. They all considered her a guiding light and are thankful for every moment spent together as they built a lifetime of cherished memories they will treasure for the rest of their lives. Words cannot express how much she will be missed, but they know she is rejoicing in her reunion with Grandpa.
Sadie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 72 years, Carrol Franklin Jeffcoat; great-grandson, Jacob Prentice Green; parents, John D. & Louise Wagnon Langford; and siblings, Rosalie Gaines, Ray Langford, and Donald Gainey. She is survived by her children, Pat (Larry) Martin, Marilyn Callaway, and Tim (Cheryl) Jeffcoat; grandchildren, Denise (Josh) Green, James (Sarah) Martin, Caroline (Will) Swift, Chris Jeffcoat, Allen Callaway, Ben (Allison) Callaway, and Nicole Jeffcoat; great-grandchildren, Kate, Matthew, McKenna Green, Henry, Rives, & Evelyn Swift, Mae & Jimmy Callaway, and Vic & J.P. Callaway; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
