Sam "Ben" Carter

October 28, 1931 — June 6, 2017

Sam “Ben” Carter, 83, a resident of Brantley, passed away on June 6, 2017, at Luverne Health and Rehab. Funeral services for Mr. Carter will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, June 8, from the Chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mr. Carter is remembered as a loving husband, father, Papa, and friend to those who knew him. He was a long-time propane delivery person and knew nearly everyone in Crenshaw County.
Locals knew that you could catch him on his front porch chewing tobacco and shooting the bull most any afternoon and evening, and he had a story to tell about almost anything -- some true, more exaggerated. He had unique phrases he always used such as, “Don’t be takin’ no wooden nickels;” “Fair to middlin’;” and, when someone had a birthday, he always asked them, “How’d you get that ugly in just that many years?”
He was a lover of westerns and bluegrass.
Until his stroke four years ago, he never missed a Rex Locklier production in Henderson. In his younger years, he was an avid raccoon hunter, always had a fresh garden in the summertime, and was a cattle farmer.
He played football for Brantley High School, where he graduated in 1954.
He joined the United States Army, completed basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, and spent the majority of his military service at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. He also attended Troy State College for sometime.
After his discharge, he worked as a potato inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture, but returned home to Brantley to take care of his mother. He also worked for an ice cream company.
Ben was a hard-worker and loyal friend.
Despite his hard work and accomplishments, there was nothing he was prouder of than his granddaughters and, in most recent years, his five great-grandchildren. He was always joking with his girls. They spent many afternoons walking in the fields, riding in the back of the truck, helping pick peas and beans, riding the tractor and the gas truck with him, and so many more memories.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Lillie Carter, sisters, Mary Lowery and Essie Hood, brother, Richard Carter, and best friend Bobby Hall.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Chris Carter, daughter, Cindy Majors, stepson, Gary Gibson, four grandchildren, Tiffaney (Reid Furgason) Gibson, Kendra Majors, Jamie (Keaton) Price, Jena Price, five great-grandchildren, Kenleigh Bolling, Mason Chandler, Jase Price, Sawyer Price and Noah Price, as well as nephews, Jerome and Benny Lowery, numerous other nieces and nephews, and special friends, Lamar King and Edwin and Genese Mitchell. Active pallbearers will be Jerome Lowery, Benny Lowery, Edwin Mitchell, Chris West, Danny Register, Duffy Casey. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 - 8 PM.
