COMPTON, Mr. Samuel Webster (Webb) passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, March 27, 2015. Webb was born in 1927 in Brantley, Alabama to the late Dolph and Mattie Compton. Webb was a shining example of what has come to be known as “The Greatest Generation.” He served his country in both World War II with occupying forces in Guam and Saipan, and in the Korean War with the Broken Heart Battalion. He fought against overwhelming odds at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in late 1950, where U.S. forces numbering around 15,000 were surrounded by 120,000 North Korean and Chinese forces. The beleaguered troops referred to themselves as “The Chosen Few.” Webb enjoyed a successful career in the refrigeration business, and, in addition to serving his country, his greatest achievement was putting four children through school at the University of Alabama. Webb was an enthusiastic Alabama football fan, and a proud member of the Red Elephant Club and Tide Pride. Webb was always the life of the party with his quick wit and storytelling, which was never lost on his children and grandchildren. Webb has passed down his storytelling skills so that his jokes and tales of the Compton family clan live on and will be retold by generations to come. Webb is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Merle Sasser Compton; his children, Adaline Compton (Ralph) Fagen, Samuel Wade (Barbara) Compton, Teresa Compton (Steve) Guarcello, and Leigh Compton (Todd) Matthews; his honorary daughter, Scottie Penton (Shane) Oliver; and his grandchildren, Max and Jacob Fagen, Samantha and Thomas Ray Compton, Nicholas Guarcello, Madison and MacKenzie Matthews, and Penton Oliver. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Thomas Ray Compton, Raymond Compton, Louise Compton, Ann Robinson, and Bobbie Sue Close. Visitation will be held at Turner Funeral Home in Luverne on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Turner Funeral Home on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 2PM followed by a cemetery service in Mount Ida Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bruce Compton, John Compton, Matthew Taylor, Max Fagen, Jake Fagen, Nicholas Guarcello, and Penton Oliver. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Mount Ida Cemetery fund in care of Brantley Bank and Trust, Brantley, Alabama 36009.
