Sarah Cockrell Clark

August 21, 1931 — January 12, 2019

Dozier

Sarah Lou Cockrell Clark, 87, of Dozier, Alabama, was welcomed home on January 12, 2019 after a long, faith-filled life.
Sarah was born to Mattie and Glover Cockrell on August 21, 1931. She was one of 8 siblings, and grew up in the community of Union in Greene County, Alabama. She graduated from Greene County High School in 1949, and she was the youngest student nurse to attend nursing school at Northington. In 1950, she was part of the ground breaking at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa. She was working as a nurse in Tallasee, Alabama, when she fell in love with Colbert Darnley “C.D.” Clark. They eloped to Meridian, Mississippi on April 6, 1953.
They soon had their first child, Debarah “Debbie” Clark, followed a few years later by their son, Colbert “Colby” Clark. They settled in Dozier, Alabama in 1954 and started Clark Construction Company together. Sarah did payroll, worked in the office, and supported the business while raising two children and entertaining in her home as much as possible.
She was a lifelong Alabama fan and, on most weekends, you could find her cheering on the Crimson Tide, playing the slot machines, dancing in her red boots, or spending time with her friends and family.
Each night before bed, Sarah read her Bible and prayed faithfully for her family and friends. She attributed God as her strength, her peace, and her joy, and she was beloved throughout her community where she was known for her generous spirit. She was a dedicated member of Dozier Methodist Church for 60 years.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, C.D. Clark; her parents, Mattie and Glover Cockrell; and six siblings Earlene Doss, Velma Phillips, Ottis Cockrell, Louis Spencer, Ina Mae May, and Geneva Sellers. She is survived by her children, Debbie (John) Roberts and Colby Clark; grandchildren, Luann (Justin) Riley, John Barry (Lauren) Roberts, Gracie Roberts, Malachi Roberts, Ezra Roberts, Gabe Roberts, Joyanne “Sissy” Roberts, Katie Roberts, Madison Clark, and Abigail Clark; great-grandchildren, Beckett and Eli Riley; and her brother Bobby (Marcille) Cockrell.
